Bishop Pudsey’s Charter

Hugh de Puiset (known as Pudsey) was Bishop of Durham from 1153 to 1195. He was a nephew of King Stephen. During his 42 year episcopacy he undertook an inquest into all the revenues, holdings and resources within the diocese. These were largely incorporated into what became known as the Bolden Book in 1183. Part of his charter  relates to Escomb and the granting of land to one of his retainers, Umfrid his carter. Umfrid also appears by name in the Bolden Book.
